architectural impossibility

wren's impossible gatehouse

Sir Christopher Wren designed the tower over the gate into Christchurch College. I heard from someone it was an architectural impossibility, you couldn't support so much weight on such a wide arch. It's not fallen over yet, though, even though all of St Aldate's is sinking into the silt.

There are five more pingo-cam + bug-eye lens photos over on the photostream.

JFYI (random names)
It's called Tom Tower because the bell in it is called Old Tom. That's the one that rings 101 times. Or is it 99? I forget. It also gave it's name to Tom Quad.
