It must be summer, the weekends are filling up. And not just with gardening, although I am about to go outside and plant some Cosmos so obscure they don't even have a printed packet. I know it's late, but the weather's been too grim for planting. Here's hoping that the late spring leads to a lazy summer and that autumn forgets to turn up till it's nearly winter.

So, next weekend it's Cambridge for a solstice party -- we're crashing overnight so could potentially see people on Saturday or Sunday if anyone is around? And any recommendations for unmissable things happening next weekend in Cambridge also most welcome. We're already doing one (the party) but there is always room for more.

London the following weekend where we will observe ART in the day and eat lunch somewhere. This is mostly to see my sister (plus neiblings) in the evening, but again, any suggestions most welcome.

After that, things get a bit stranger. I'm going to do a day of Tank Fest with timscience, and I'm heading to Hampon Court flower show with tinyjo. Because I like tanks AND flowers.

I also quite fancy catching one of the Malmaison roof films this year though buying in advance is probably asking for a monsoon. Also, everything I want to see if midweek which makes it not very suitable for any out-of-towners who might want to watch Life of Pi or Labyrinth with me.

Any chance your trip to Cambridge will take you down Mill Road at all? -- Because (if and only if you are going down that way anyway) there's a shop called Al-Amin just near Devonshire Road where I got some Turkish mixed spice (Karışık baharat)... I don't know where else to get any (clearly, thousands of places in the UK, but I don't know 'em): Juggzy promised to get me some from Al-Amin, but it's awkward reminding people to do favours for you that they've forgotten...

We went that way last time, and it looks well worth a visit so I'll give it a go if we go by!

Well, provided it's not out of your way, I shall be much indebted - thanks! :)

If Jeremy's scavenging isn't up to scratch I can always get some and post it on.

Looks like it might be a wild goose chase -- see Juggzy's comment below -- but thanks for the offer.

I haven't... the thing is that Baharat varies (apparently) throughout the Middle East, and I believe the Turkish version contains some dried mint, and possibly omits one or more of the other things listed for that one. So it'd be similar, but not the same -- whereas what I happened across in Cambridge was exactly the same thing that I hadn't got hold of for years.

Damnit, there must be somewhere accessible that sells it in non-silly quantities for non-silly prices -- just wish I knew where! Ho hum -- not to worry...

Yes, Turkish style is minted. You might have to mix your own!

Found a recipe a while ago and made a whole jar up -- was almost (but not really) what I wanted.

Just found a website selling it for £1.60 for 100g, which seemed reasonable enough -- but by the time I'd chosen extra things to bring it up to their minimum order and added £7 for courier (why can't they just put a packet in the post!?) it came to over £18 and I balked...

That's some pretty high courier rates -- but I haveta say, that is about what I spend on my spice orders

Hi Richard - I did try to get it for you but they looked at me blankly. I'm sorry I forgot to tell you that I tried.

Ahh -- never mind, and thanks for trying. Odd that they had it that one time, though, and annoying that they then failed to have it again! Hmph, I say -- but thanks, and apologies for casting nasturtiums :)

I'm sorry, Richard but I only tried around twice. They may well have gotten it in after I asked, or before I asked and had it run out. I don't go down to Mill Road very often, and having tried twice and failed, and had no reminder from you that this was a terribly urgent thing, I simply forgot to try again.

Your best bet is probably to try figuring out what is in it, and making it raw. You know.

It's not particularly odd for a delicatessan / exotic food shop to have something in only once - they won't reorder unless it's something that has a promising turn over.

Or, you know, you could try the internet; if you are convinced that Al Amin has it in regularly, then it's probably popular enough to be sold in several internet outlets.

Oh, look, I did it for you. This was the first English site. There are many Turkish sites. Some of them indicate that it's a Turkish Garam Masala.

I'd be interested in the roof films. Midweek is doable for me now teaching is over for the summer - though the option to stay overnight would be appreciated. I might be out of the country though!

Life of Pi is Fri Jul 12th, Labyrinth is Thu Jul 4th -- er, and I'm in Manchester on the 4th, so that's out actually. So it'd be Pi on the 12th, I think?

No I've not bought it, in fact all I've done all day is sleep, I've been so knackered! If you could get the ticket I'll get in the cocktails on the day. :)

If you fancy bobbing in or meeting up at some point, we're around for the weekend. Jesus college still has the big metal dinosaurs (they're pretty permanent) but I'm not aware of anything in particualr happening at the weekend.

dinosaurs!
We could nip by around tea time, like we did last year?

P.S. The internet is suggesting that the dinosaurs have decamped to London!

Yes, that's right, Saturday. I'll text on the day an ETA (assuming no numbers have changed)

If you fancy some kitten fettling, I'm working on Saturday but could be At Home to select visitors on Sunday morning. Although I'm pretty much on the number 1 bus route, I am quite a way out of the centre, so perfectly understand if you can't make it!

Would kind of around lunchtime Sunday suit? We could see you on the way out of town (leading to the inevitable sequel - do you have parking nearby?)
juggzy
12th Jun, 2013 19:31 (UTC)
That would be great - there is reasonable parking nearby to me, in the community centre car park. Right next to my house can be a bit of a problem, but as I say, there is this carpark at the corner of Campkin Road and Arbury Road that always has free space. My house is about 200 m from there.

We were really looking forward to seeing you and Dax but I think we are currently too embroiled with our poor infirm old cat to spend time away from home. Teazel should be fine, but we don't want to leave him overnight. Rearrange for later this summer xx J
