if your comic strip needs footnotes ....

insentitive crowYes, yes, yes, alright. I realise half of you won't know what the heck Takeshi's Castle is. Fewer still will know who Mark Lamarr is, or why I associate him with the torture and death of lightweight popstars. And yes, I know it's rather obviously scrawled on the back of an envelope (which contained yet another uniquely tailored loan offer) using the first five pens that came to hand. No, I couldn't be arsed to clean up the artwork. Felt tips, you know. It just takes too long. Look, it's got an insensitive crow in a trenchcoat, what more do you want?

(Times Are Tough For Romantics #1 will be on its way to you this weekend; last night we wrote the next 'zine over the phone. It's our own antizine: Times are Romantic for the Tough: An Antizine for Antiheroes, or, How To Get Laid WithOut Even Trying!")

We went through a Takeshi's Castle cult viewing phase at work a year or so ago. There's nothing quite like watching the Japanese ritually humiliate themselves on TV. I always like the mad dash across the fake stepping stones, and kept waiting for someone to knock their teeth out.

I still have it
(quite far down the list) on Tivo. I like the ones where it's kids being egged on by their parents. Abusive and entertaining!

Insensitive Crow should have its own X-title.

I get the feeling
I may be seeing more of him. Her. Actually, I'm not at all sure what sex it is. I guess insensitive crow values its privacy.

Crow is excellent. I especially like the teeth!

Clearly they're not as rare as hen's teeth.

I will be trying to work the words 'Insensitive Crow' and 'The torture and death of lightweight popstars' into my professional conversations today.

Is there any sort of official Takeshi site?
The takeshi's castle fan site is all very well but I'd be curious to see some info that is not from watching show. I mean, I don't need a web site to tell me there is a Boxing Monster in the Knock-Knock game, but I might be curious as to whether there is some particular reason why. Some people might like an explanation of the relationship between Takeshi's castle, 'Beat' Takeshi, and Takeshi Kitano. Or, 'look! it's Zatôichi in a dodgy wig driving a dodgem!'

Also there is a completely made up list of injuries, which disturbed me a bit until I realized they were lies.

kitano has a site himself
How's your japanese? ... but I doubt that it mentions Takeshi's Castle nowadays ... the wikipedia says we're still watching shows from the 80s. I quite like this french site; Sorte de Fort Boyard sous acides....

That 'Takeshi's Castle' is still making the rounds. I remember first watching it in Taiwan in 1990, and it had been going on for years even then.

Interestingly, it's been repackaged here with sexual innuendo'd voiceovers (in the way of 'sportscasters') as 'MXC.' I find it cheap, because the original is pure entertainment as it is. :-)

ah, we get
the UK Challenge channel re-mix; voiceover by Craig Charles (Red Dwarf). It's OK, though he labours the bit about having to avoid your ring being penetrated a bit.
11th Feb, 2005 15:24 (UTC)
btw, a lethal Takeshi's Castle...
Battle Royale perhaps? ;-)

I think that leaving out
the gurning emerald guards in huge comedy costumes misses a key element of humiliation from the whole process; for the proper 'keshi experience, it is not enough to make a total tit of yourself while performing dangerous stuntlets -- you must do so enthusiastically and joyfully, while undergoing that subtle mix of encouragement, mockery, abuse and physical attack ...
