I was messing around in London yesterday when I got the news that Steve Whitaker (stickismyfriend, aka Steemol) had suddenly and unexpectedly died. I was in the Tate, in a darkened room, watching some animations (black and white, crabby, political, scratchy) and my phone was not on vibrate.

After I'd taken the news, outside, by the elevators, I found another darkened room with different animation showing (one of those old GPO films drawn straight on the film cells) and let the jazz, bright colours and abstract swirls wash over me, and over me.

If you want to check out some of Steve's works, here's his Flickr stream. He'll be missed, by me, by others.

I'm stunned. Steve is another denizen of the comic scene, like Andy, who I didn't personally know very well, but admired immensely and liked from a shy distance. He was a great, generous teacher and workshop leader, not to mention a super artist. This is just as wrong as it gets...

Hasn't sunk in here, either.

I didn't know him well, he friended me after responding to a sketch of mine he liked. I was well chuffed. We chatted a bit about inks and brushes, and I got to know his work after that, becoming familiar with his unique sort of style. I really admired his work.

I'm sad I didn't speak to him more, I would have liked to have known him better. Very sad news.
