up from the drawing board

In all the excitement over my missing guillotine (now found) and a whole bunch of stuff from work, I've somewhat forgotten the rather important thing I've been doing with Ellen and Sacha, which is the latest edition of Whores of Mensa, whose theme (vague as ever) is this time, "Ladies of Paris".

This is currently at the printers, and (I am touching an enormous block of wood as I say this) will I hope be ready for Comiket this weekend.

One of the most remarkable things about this episode has been the genius (if rather epic) idea (not mine -- I'm inclined to blame Mardou!) of having a cover covered with masses of portraits of Parisian women.

Here -- an exclusive. First glance at the cover, from the proof copy I have in my bag right now:

whores of mensa 4

WOM is an A4 comic, so all of those portraits, while tiny, are clearly discernable. On the back, we're pretending to be Eloise, in a posh Parisian hotel.

A closer look at some of the ladies:

Close up of the ladies

If you'd like to look at the ladies I drew closer, and in more detail, I did a little gallery, with some more detail about who they are.

That cover is completely fantastic and I can't wait to get a copy.
21st Nov, 2008 08:17 (UTC)
See you at Comiket, perhaps?
21st Nov, 2008 08:52 (UTC)
Sadly not. I shall have to mail order I think.
20th Nov, 2008 19:00 (UTC)
OOOh, brilliant. I'm gonna get me a copy!
20th Nov, 2008 19:20 (UTC)
Moi aussi!
20th Nov, 2008 19:15 (UTC)
Wow! I will be looking for it in Gosh next week.
21st Nov, 2008 09:57 (UTC)
Ellen does Gosh, I'll ask her when she's going to be able to run some copies over.

Bizarrely, I was re-reading #3 last night, steeped in Lemsip and the thick fog of a cold. It's brill, and this looks briller. Er, brillo. How should I get a copy? Buttonhole you?
21st Nov, 2008 09:49 (UTC)
I'll post some ordering details once I have the items safe back from the printers (and have checked postage costs) -- or you can buttonhole me, yes. With a little warning I can easily have comics about my person
27th Nov, 2008 12:33 (UTC)
I can do the Paypal thing, actually, and am about to indulge in that very purchase. Yes.
27th Nov, 2008 13:30 (UTC)
Thanks for the headsup, I'll go trawl my spamfilter... oh, there you are!

You shall shortly receive warez
21st Nov, 2008 00:09 (UTC)
Must Have Copy! Send the set with Damien next week and I'll send him back with the cash.
21st Nov, 2008 09:47 (UTC)
Good idea! I shall encomic Damian for next weekend.
21st Nov, 2008 09:52 (UTC)
Can I have the full set please? I prefer reading a comics series in one concentrated wodge, I've never got the hang of following individual issues, I'm the sort who always wants to wait for the collected graphic novel issue.
Let me know how much and I'll endeavour to have the correct monies to hand over (or a cheque?)
21st Nov, 2008 09:56 (UTC)
It's not a series, each comic contains three (sometimes more) self-contained short stories.
21st Nov, 2008 09:58 (UTC)
Yeah I know, but I sort of want to read them all at once. I'm weird like that.
Box set! ;-)

I'm afraid I only have my library copy of Whores 2 left (that's the mermaid one), but I can supply the other three?

I love the cover too. But I'm sulking terribly over the fact that you thought up that Cthulu-song and I didn't!

Re: Cthulu-ron
It was originally a bedtime story for Tim's cat called "The Littlest Shoggoth", but over time, it became more burlesque!

I'm so glad I picked this up at Comiket - I love Whores of Mensa. This cover is absolutely amazing - love it. Is it all yours Jeremy, or a combined effort?

the cover!
Les Dames are a joint effort, with idea, background, layout and collage by the lovely Mardou (respect is due!) our biplane is by Ellen, and each one of Les Dames has been drawn as a separate picture by one of us. You can see some of the pictures larger and in more detail over at http://whoresofmensa.livejournal.com/

Jeremy that's the coolest cover I've seen in ages, I love it. Sgt Pepper's filtered through the feminine and with Parisian style, tres chic, n'est pas? :-) Hope you guys don't mind, but I think I just have to borrow that image and link for the FP blog, its too cool not to mention.

27th Nov, 2008 12:23 (UTC)
oh thank you,
and not at all, borrow away! There's a bigger version of the cover on the Whores of Mensa website if you want a closer look -- but to find out who's who, you have to buy the comic (the key is on the inside back cover!)

Re: oh thank you,
I talked to Ellen this afternoon to get the details from her so we could list it on the FP site like we did with #3, will no doubt order one for myself when they arrive :-)
